Car slams into crash scene

The man was taking his wife to hospital when he collided into the emergency vehicles.

A motorist rushing his wife to hospital crashed into paramedics and police who were treating three people injured in an initial accident scene along the N2 north near the old airport in the early hours of Saturday morning, 5 September.

Three people were seriously injured in the initial accident at about 12.20am when a vehicle veered off the road and collided with the concrete centre median. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was found lying on the road.

Netcare 911 paramedics and other services were treating the injured when a vehicle slammed into the accident scene, scrapping an ambulance and a police vehicle. A report from the scene indicates the man was taking his wife to a Durban hospital for admission when he collided into the emergency vehicles.

Paramedics found the man and his wife both sustained serious injuries. Fortunately, having heard the screeching brakes, the paramedics and police ran from the scene, jumped onto the concrete barrier and witnessed the vehicle slamming into the ambulance with such force that the side door flew off  and the vehicle was flung into the police van.

Medics stabilised the patients at the scene before transporting them to a local hospital.
