[PHOTOS] Bluff audit focuses on eyesores

We believe we can improve the Bluff

AN audit of the Bluff by the Bluff Alliance (BA) on Tuesday, 11 August revealed areas of concern which are in much need of attention.

The team did the rounds, noting what needs improvement, where there are risks and how residents can improve their surroundings.

“We believe we can improve the Bluff by identifying such issues, registering them with the officials concerned and making sure they are dealt with,” said BA co-ordinator, Ivor Aylward.

Top of their list was the ongoing problems with the Bluff weirs. These include the two in the Bluff National Park Golf Course and the one on the Amanzimnyama canal, adjacent to Solomon Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales VC).

“The problem with the weirs situated near Club Road is that they are not functional due to the vandalising of the grids, so debris is landing on Ansteys Beach. The weir on the Amanzimnyama shows that a large oil spill has occurred again, which has already found its way into the harbour, affecting the yachts at the Bluff Yacht Club and killing marine life.”

The BA called for officials in the municipality to investigate this and the problem with petrol fumes in Island View.

“We found petrol fumes emanating from the stormwater drains on part of Island View Road beyond Turner Street. Officials have promised to open all those drains to check whether or not there are leaks from the tanks in the vicinity,” said Aylward.

Also included in their list of concerns is the Fynnlands station area, illegal dumping, specifically below the Pengelly Flats and the bottom of Peacehaven Place, the need for a clean-up and an increase in the number of bins in the Fynnlands shopping district, taxis parking next to the Bluff Towers and the state of beach railings along Foreshore Drive, with a special note on the lack of communication regarding the beach upgrade proposals.

“The Bluff Alliance commends the majority of residents for the generally good condition of their properties,” said Aylward, as he called for people to ensure they keep their verges clean too.
