Cops collar knife-point robbers within 48 hours

Brighton Beach SAPS management commends Csts Mgwababane and Mkhize

ALERT Brighton Beach SAPS officers tracked down and arrested two men on Friday, 3 July, within 48 hours of their 1 July armed robbery.

On Wednesday, 1 July a Shellcross resident who was walking along Solomon Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales VC) near the M4 had a knife held to his throat while two men searched him for valuables.

The men took his mobile phone, cash, ID book and electricity slips and ran in the direction of the M4. The man gave police a description of his attackers, which was circulated to local officers.

On Friday, 3 July, while on patrol in Clairwood at about 6.45am with Constable Skhumbuzo Mkhize, Constable Sizwe Mgwababane saw a man on Sirdar Road who matched the description of one of the armed robbers.

When Cst Mgwababane searched the man, he found a mobile phone just like the one reported stolen. The man admitted to being one of the robbers. Csts Mgwababane and Mkhize continued their search for the second man later that day and found him walking on the sidewalk.

An okapi knife, similar to the one used during the armed robbery, was found in his possession and he admitted to the crime. Both men were charged with robbery with a weapon other than a firearm.

Brighton Beach SAPS management commends Csts Mgwababane and Mkhize for their vigilance, seizing the weapon and recovering the stolen mobile device all within 48 hours.
