Strategic tour of SDB planned

We are happy about what has been achieved thus far.

A STRATEGIC South Durban Basin (SDB) tour is expected following a service delivery workshop hosted by the SDB Area Based Management (ABM) office on Tuesday, 23 June.

Topics of discussion during the workshop at the Bluff National Park Golf Course included load shedding and the Clean my City campaign, with SDB ABM operations and enforcement co-ordinator, Dumisani Msomi adding that they will soon host a strategic tour focussed on the SDB.

According to a press release from the SDB ABM’s Sphindile Mbatha, the hot topic was load shedding and how it affects local communities. Deputy head of the high voltage operations in the eThekwini electricity unit, Raj Drochand spoke about this.

“eThekwini load shedding seeks to offer some protection to its economy. To achieve this it is necessary to classify the high voltage (HV) substations depending on the majority load types supplied,” he said.

He went on to add that they can’t predict when load shedding will take place. They can only inform people when Eskom declares it.

Durban Solid Waste’s Justice Shange spoke about the Clean my City campaign, while Chumisa Thengwa from the biodiversity assessment impact branch underlined the support they give departments involved in environmental projects.

SDB ABM municipal services manager, Sifiso Xulu said the workshop was aimed at assessing management plans from service units outlined in September 2014.

“At the beginning of every financial year we come together as different stakeholders consisting of line department officials, businesses, councillors and ward committee members to look at how the area is going to be managed. Workshop stakeholders agree on a vision for the area which enables them to work together in fast-tracking service delivery, which is assessed and reviewed at the end of the year.

We are happy about what has been achieved thus far, given that we also used the 2014/15 financial year to revamp service delivery forums,” said Xulu.
