SDB youth sports event on the ball

A big thank-you goes out to all the stakeholders, coaches and community members who were involved

IN a bid to encourage youngsters to take up sport, the South Durban Basin (SDB) Sports Confederation (SC) hosted a two-day multi code youth sports event from 15 to 16 June.

Under the banner of ‘dream it-believe it-achieve it’ and in partnership with the SDB Area Based Management office (ABM), eThekwini sports department and provincial sports department, the SDBSC invited youth from the Bluff, Wentworth, Dakota, Lamontville and Umlazi to the Ogle Road sports grounds to learn and to have fun.

Coinciding with Youth Day, the event not only encouraged children to become active, but allowed them to celebrate and recognise their potential.

Lamontville came out tops in the U13 and U19 netball contest, while Wentworth Warriors won the U15 title. Wiesthan FC placed first in the U15 soccer competition, with eThekwini Coastals FC first in U17 and Chelsea FC first in U19. In rugby, the U13 title went to Brighton Beach Primary School while the U19 title went to Durban Academy High School.

“I am proud to see the SDB community take the time to make a change in their youths’ lives. Thank-you to the SDB ABM, eThekwini Sports department and provincial sports department for making this event a reality. Also a big thank-you goes out to all the stakeholders, coaches and community members who were involved in lending a helping hand by shaping our youth so they can participate in sports,” said SDBSC chairman, Carl Webster.

SDB ABM social development coordinator, Anitha Govender added: “When sport is applied correctly, it is able to strengthen young people and shape them and their future by becoming active in shaping their communities. Sports can provide a positive distraction from violence and inequality in our communities.”
