THE final round of the men’s interclub league bowls was played on Saturday.

Wanderers Bowling Club’s A and B sides, playing away to Durban and Wentworth respectively, both only managed two points against five to the opponents.

This was thanks to wins by Steve Van Rooyen for the A side and Eric Smit for the B side. The C, D and E sides, however, all finished with a flurry, scoring a full house 5-0 against Amanzimtoti D and F sides and Stella Park C respectively. The C side, lying in 2nd place with equal points with Chatsworth in their division, thus secured a certain promotion to the fourth division. Well done to the skips Jimmy Neill and Robin Grobler and their teams for this outstanding effort.

The club welcomes Ruaan Victor who has joined as a dual member with Durban. All hope his stay and experiences with the club will be memorable and fruitful.

In the Lyn Wilds pairs last Wednesday, Colin Nicholas and Johan Nel won the first session with 2+8, R Meyer and C Honiball went on to secure the second session with 2+14, and the overall winners with a score of 4+20 were the father and son combination of Raj and Russell Rangiah. Russell also won R20 on the 60/40 board draw with Linda Hewer taking the lion’s share of R40. Bill Addinall won the meat raffle and the lotto was not won so it will be carried over.

Sunday’s Acutts fours skins was somewhat depleted due to Father’s Day commitments but ended up with 10 teams, two of which played as trips. The Queensburgh team of Duncan Buckthorpe, Shawn Sadler, Red Slogrove and Marc Rogers won the sportsman’s prize with 1-26. First session went to Arnie Harper, Harold Dix, Lorraine Du Preez and Gwen Tait with 10+9 and the second session went to visitors Clive Du Plooy, Ron Davids, Pierre and Judy Greene. Second overall was the team of Kim, Nigel and Lorinne Hawkins with Claude Newman with a 17+30. The winners, and on the perch for R500 next month, was the team of Lofty Cawthorne, Bob Hayward, Archie Fisher and Ann Hewer, playing for the first time in this tournament in the place of a disabled Ken Koch. Dianne Swann won the huge leg of pork. Clive Symons won R40 on the 60/40 board which he kindly donated back to the club coffers, and R20 went to Harold Dix.

Steve Van Rooyen and Graham Funnell did well in the pro–10 tournament, making it to the semi-finals in which they were pipped. In the playoffs, however, they won their match to finish third overall. This was a great achievement. Well done chaps.

In the women’s club open singles, Jackie Freeman hit form in the morning when she despatched Lorinne Hawkins 21-7, then in the afternoon, sent Nicola Bauristhene packing with another fine win of 21-6. Joan Bruce beat Gwen Tait 21-11 to advance to the finals where she will meet Jackie and this highly charged and interesting match will take place on Saturday, 27 June at 1.30pm.

Last Friday, the various meat pack winners were: Lamb pack – Gwen Tait, rolled beef – Lorraine du Preez, pork roast – Ursula, rump steak – John Campbell, chicken pack – Brian Craig, chicken – Porky.

The R900 snowball was not won as Cindy Marais was not present.

The men are to note that the men’s open singles is to be played this Saturday, 27 June at 1.30pm (two rounds) and will continue on Sunday morning at 9.30am for a further two rounds. The draw will be made during the week, and players are asked and urged to co-operate fully with the men’s competition secretary who needs to get this competition finalised during July owing to the fact that the champion of champions takes place in the first weekend of August, and there are Dan Draper and KZN tournaments getting in the way. Remember, for those who normally play out on Sunday mornings – your club comes first. The end of the league braai will happen straight after the men’s singles on Saturday, 27 June. Take your own meat and salad, braais will be supplied.
