Man on bail for murders arrested for firing shots in Wentworth

A man out on bail shot at Wentworth residents on Sunday, 12 April.

A MAN out on bail for two counts of murder was arrested on Monday, 13 April, a day after he opened fire on Wentworth residents.

On Sunday, 12 April a group of armed men was seen walking along the notorious Hime Street in Wentworth, headed towards another group of men standing outside a block of flats.

One of the men opened fire on the group outside the flats, sending residents screaming and running for cover. Thankfully, nobody was injured during the shooting.

The KZN Hawks were called in and registered a case against the shooter with charges of malicious damage to property, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, inciting public violence and five counts of attempted murder.

Two bullet heads and a shell casing were found at the site and have been sent for ballistic analysis. Through their investigation, the Hawks determined the identity of the shooter – a 20-year-old Wentworth man who was out on bail on two counts of murder.

The Hawks, Metro Police and the Durban Flying Squad followed a tip-off to Chatsworth on Monday, 13 April where the man was found hiding in a car in a yard. As he tried to escape, Metro Police officers caught him and he was arrested.

“The members of the KZN Hawks are congratulated on their thorough investigation immediately upon the docket being registered, which enabled them to trace the suspect. We also thank the Metro Police and Durban Flying Squad members for their partnership during this operation, which led to the apprehension of the suspect.” said Brighton Beach cluster media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
