Official’s response welcomed

In the public domain, the buy-in of officials is essential in the process of addressing and attempting to resolve issues.

EDITOR – Eurakha Singh, the acting senior manager of the South Durban Basin area, is to be complimented on her response (SUN, February 6) to my January 9 catalogue of 2014 failed issues in ward 66.

Although that list was not aimed at her, it is courageous of her to step up and indicate a willingness to become proactively engaged.

As transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of good governance, as a public representative, it is my duty to raise such issues without fear or favour. In the public domain, the buy-in of officials is essential in the process of addressing and attempting to resolve issues.

That is so because a councillor can only recommend an action to an official. He may not instruct an official.

While Eurakha’s resolve in making 2015 ‘a year of success for ward 66’ is to be welcomed, the biggest challenge facing governance is that of enforcement. If she can prove instrumental in the application and upholding of bylaws, then 2015 will indeed be crowned with success.
