Policeman gets bail for New Year’s day shooting

Bluff shooter out on bail for attempted murder.

THE policeman arrested for the New Year’s day shooting of a man on Bluff Road was granted bail of R10,000 by the Durban Regional Court on Wednesday, 14 January.

Despite Brighton Beach SAPS’ Warrant Officer Marius Van Der Looy’s request for it to be denied, Captain Larry Heslop, who was arrested for attempted murder after he shot a man in the arm in the early hours of 1 January outside the Hip Hop Palace, was given bail.

The magistrate did, however, attach provisos to the 44-year-old’s release. He must report to the Brighton Beach police station every Monday to sign the bail conditions register and he is not allowed to intimidate or communicate with any witnesses.

On another occasion last year, Capt Heslop was arrested and charged with pointing a firearm in public after he assaulted a man on Florida Road. This case, along with the New Year’s day shooting are being investigated by Brighton Beach SAPS.
