Department hosts inter-crèche sports day

Local ECD Forum hosts sports day for youngsters.

THE Wentworth Early Childhood Development Forum (WECDF) hosted an inter-crèche sports day recently, in conjunction with the KZN department of sport and recreation.

The department has been encouraging participation in sport in Wentworth, especially within schools and approached the WECDF to host the sports day. “Sport is very important. Many young children do not get much exercise and spend hours in front of the television, so playing some sport and being active can make a big difference to their health,” said KZN department of sport and recreation sports promotion officer, Dorcas Sambo.

Children, teachers, parents and siblings delighted in a day of fun, exercise and entertainment. Gateway Clinic members provided vitamins and measured the children and the department of solid waste was on hand to listen to queries.

“At ECD level, sport is a way of making exercise an enjoyable and social event. We acknowledge that obesity is a common problem today. Playing sport can improve physical fitness, confidence through learning skills, learn to control their impulses, build friendships, help children to learn about rules and fair playing and cope with winning and losing. The WECDF extends its appreciation to the KZN department of sport and recreation for the role it has played throughout 2014, from the sponsoring of sporting equipment for each ECD centre to hosting an inter-crèche sports day,” said WECDF chairman, Laurell Cook.
