Cllr pays tribute to outgoing ratepayers chairman

Together Ivor and myself have experienced the tardiness and shoddiness of so-called service delivery first hand.

EDITOR – It was with great sadness that I read of Ivor Aylward’s decision to retire from active civic involvement.

His contribution to society has been enormous and unrelenting and has far exceeded that of any other role player in that field.

In recent years Ivor has proved a valuable and tireless ally in addressing municipal and civic issues. For someone who was not paid for his time and energy, his sense of purpose and commitment put many elected public representatives to shame. His perseverance and dedication were the hallmarks of his years of civic involvement. He approached every issue with zeal and determination.

The fact that he his resignation and retirement has been based on the failure of municipal structures to function as they should, sends out a very significant message. For what Ivor is saying is that our municipal establishment, for all its massive expense, is virtually dysfunctional. And he is right. Together Ivor and myself have experienced the tardiness and shoddiness of so-called service delivery first hand. Indifference and incompetence, I regret to say, have become the footprints of much of what passes for service delivery in Ethekwini.

The abject failure of the KZN Premier’s initiative, the War Room, is the latest example of the reality that government has come to be premised purely on rhetoric and not on concrete delivery. I, therefore, share in Ivor’s disgust at the decline of our suburb and our city at the hands of those who now prevail at City Hall.

On behalf of the Bluff, thank you, Ivor, for all your efforts.
