School’s ‘wall of safety’ earns kudos

Grosvenor Girls High School wins award for safety board.

GROSVENOR Girls High School puts safety first as they win the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management’s (ABM) best safety notice board competition.

The school safety programme, which began last year in partnership with Safer Cities and the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, saw 20 local high schools join in. They were tasked with creating a ‘wall of safety’ on notice boards provided to the schools.

The drive was aimed at raising awareness of safety issues impacting the lives of the pupils. Through a determined effort by the 17 eager school media centre monitors involved, Grosvenor Girls were named as champions.

“They won the competition for having the most creative, innovative and effective notice board from the 20 schools that took part,” said SDB ABM social development co-ordinator, Anitha Govender.

Grosvenor Girls educator, Sarisha Komal added: “I am very pleased with the effort and enthusiasm put in and displayed by the girls. They have raised awareness and interest in important issues that affect our pupils’ lives. They have done Grosvenor proud.”

SDB ABM Manager Eurakha Singh urges other schools involved in the programme to follow in Grosvenor’s footsteps. “Congratulations to Grosvenor Girls. I urge all other schools that are part of this initiative to use the ‘Wall of Safety’ boards to educate and empower pupils on important safety issues. This is also an opportunity to put your school on the map,” she said.
