Bluff road block nets 17 drunk drivers

Police caution motorists who drive under the influence that more road block operations are planned.

In an effort to eradicate drinking and driving within the South Durban area, Brighton Beach SAPS arrested 17 motorists in a road block at Solomon Mhlangu Road (Edwin Swales Drive) on Saturday, 6 September.

The ages of motorists arrested range from 24 to 60-years-old. “There has been an increase in reckless and negligent driving within our policing area with sporadic incidents of alcohol abuse being a contributing factor,” said Brighton Beach SAPS communications officer, Capt Le Roux.
“Brighton Beach SAPS management congratulates Detective Constable Thandiwe Mgcongo who is the chief investigator for cases of drinking and driving within the Brighton Beach Policing area. She has once again proven that the manner in which she conducts her investigations has ensured that those driving under the influence of alcohol within our policing area are being brought to book. Within the last month she has ensure the conviction of seven drunk driving cases with fines being issued, ranging from R 5,000 to R23,000. Cst Thandiwe Mgcongo is congratulated on the convictions she has achieved,” she said.

Police caution motorists who drive under the influence that more road block operations are planned. “Remember that you are not only putting yourself and your passengers at risk of serious injury or death but also other road users. There is also no safe limit when it comes to drinking and driving. If you are intending to socialise and consume alcohol, rather appoint a designated driver or make use of taxi or shuttle services rather than getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.” said Le Roux.
