Toy gun oil theft solved within a week

Two of the accused pleaded guilty to armed robbery and were each sentenced to six years in prison.

A business premises in Richborough Road, Clairwood was burgled by five thieves using a toy gun on Sunday, 31 August.

Two of the men held-up the security guard at gunpoint and tied him up. The group then proceeded to offload cooking oil to the value R20, 000 from trucks. The thieves found two men hiding inside one of the trucks and tied them up.
Brighton Beach SAPS task team received information on Friday, 5 September which led them to an informal settlement in Clairwood. Police found seven men linked to the business robbery.

During preliminary questioning, police established four other people were also involved. The eighth perpetrator was arrested on Friday afternoon by Detective W/O Marius van der Looyi. All eight robbers were charged and appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 September. Two of the accused pleaded guilty to armed robbery and were each sentenced to six years in prison.

“Brighton Beach SAPS management commends all the members involved for the manner in which they followed up on the intelligence they gathered with regards to business robbery which resulted in the arrest of the eight perpetrators. Detective Warrant Officer Marius Van Der Looy is also commended for the manner in which he had conducted his investigation which resulted in the imprisonment of two of the perpetrators,” said Brighton Beach communications officer, Capt Le Roux.
