Yellowwood Park author publishes second book

The story spans two continents and is about forbidden love and adventure

A Yellowwood Park resident’s passion for writing and telling a story has led him to publish his second novel.
Frank Naguran has just launched his new novel entitled Dupes of Destiny. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Indian indenture system. The story spans two continents and is about forbidden love and adventure. Dupes of Destiny details the reasons why emmigrants wanted to join the indenture system.
The writing enthusiast was born in Scottburgh and has lived in Yellowwood Park for the past 20 years. Frank’s father was an indentured labourer.
Franks’s books are self-published. “Ever since primary school I’ve had a burning desire to write,” said Frank. The 85-year-old published his first book ‘Echoes from my valley’ in 2010, which coincided with the 150th anniversary of Indians settling in KwaZulu-Natal. “When I published my first book there was a flurry of Indian writers publishing books at the time and I had a story to tell,” said Frank. ‘Echoes from my valley’ is based on Frank’s life as well as the history of Indian education from 1860 onwards.
Frank has a PhD in education and first started teaching at a primary school in 1952. He worked for Indian Affairs in Durban for 44 years and was in charge of Indian education when he retired in 1989. Family is a big part of Frank’s writing. His wife of 59 years, Gonam is an eager reader herself. “Frank’s books are wonderful and I don’t say that just because he is my husband,” said Gonam. The couple have two sons and three daughters. “My children are like my sub-editors,” said Frank.
Besides being an avid writer, Frank enjoys hand-work, reading and watching cricket. For more information or to order Dupes of Destiny, contact Frank on 031-462-3376 or email naguran@telkomsa.net.
