Hikers to conquer valleys and castles

Meet at Stella Sports Club, 175 Helen Joseph Road (formerly Davenport Road) at 1.45pm.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club’s Saturday and Sunday hiking programme for the third weekend in August sees hikers enjoy the sights and sounds of Pigeon Valley on Saturday, 16 August.

Meet at Stella Sports Club, 175 Helen Joseph Road (formerly Davenport Road) at 1.45pm. Some street walking to Pigeon Valley, with some steep hills going up to St Augustine’s Hospital and the university. Those keen to do a shorter hike can meet at 2.45pm at the entrance of Pigeon Valley in Princess Alice Avenue.

This hike is graded two, easy to moderate.

On Sunday, hikers head for 17 Stonehaven Castle in Shongweni.

Meet at Union Main Centre, Old Main Road, Pinetown at 8am, or outside the Assagay Hotel at 8.15am, to drive in convoy to the castle. There is a steep uphill from the railway line to Summerveld, returning on a circular path over grasslands and through bush. Petrol sharing costs R20 per person. The hike takes place over 15km and is graded three or strenuous.
