Circus time at YWPWI

Members we will be needing raffles for the birthday party and if at all possible we all like things to eat.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute (YWPWI) president, Vanessa Wilesmith welcomed all the members although there were a few missing, but thoughts are with Gerda Viljoen, Barbara Christen, Maria McDonald and Bev Holthauzen who have not been feeling well lately.

It was great to see Sharon Quail present and looking good. Able secretary Marsha Hart read out the report and treasurer Wendy Henderson confirmed that YWPWI is solvent for the moment. Unfortunately there are no birthdays this month. Members are advised that the WI needs raffles for the birthday party and if at all possible, everyone enjoys things to eat.

As always, many thanks to the volunteers especially Rob Philgene and Shawn (Ian/John) Quail, who did Meals on Wheels. A remark was passed that these people who receive meals actually need someone to talk to and are lonely.

YWPWI will be doing duty at the Outspan as usual on Monday, 18 August and at Botanic Gardens on Saturday, 23 August, and needs a couple more volunteers to assist. The WI donated R200 to its residential home at Richmond this month and they were very grateful.

YWPWI had a thank you letter from Crow. A reminder to members not to forget to put your change into ‘Percy’ as it all goes to Crow eventually. The Seafarers gloves that members have been knitting will be handed over at the birthday party so members are urged to get busy. After a delicious tea and lots of cake, everyone got busy making items for the birthday party, the theme of which is ‘circus’ so all members and friends are to turn up dressed appropriately. YWPWI is always fortunate to have Linda Melson present. She gave some tips on how to correctly enter the competitions.

Competitions:

  • Floral: First Marsha Hart.
  • Agri and horti: Wendy Henderson.
  • Craft: First Jean Ball, second Sheila Philgene, third Marsha Hart.
  • Handicraft: First Wendy van Eyk, second Marsha Hart.
  • Adult ed: First Caryl Howard and Jean Donkin, second Marsha Hart and Wendy Henderson, third Joan Prenger and Jean Ball.
  • Homemaking: First Jean Ball, second Marsha Hart.
  • Best bloom: Wendy Henderson and Sheila Philgene.
  • Merit: First Marsha Hart and Sheila Philgene.

Many thanks are extended to all members who enter the competitions and to judge Linda Melson. YWPWI looks forward to seeing all members and friends on Monday, 25 August for the party.
