Youth ambassadors taught to find their voices

Local youth ambassadors learn to fight for their communities.

THE Bluff Eco Park played host to 35 grade 10 pupils from Monday to Friday, 14 to 18 July who were inducted into the Democracy Development Program’s (DDP) youth ambassadors programme.

The programme, now in its 21st year, aims to improve the leadership skills of socially-conscious youngsters who are keen to make a difference in their communities. The new inductees participated in numerous workshops and group activities guided by DDP director, Dr Rama Naidu, DDP co-ordinator, Brian Bhengu and DDP community connector, Nalini Munsamy.

The pupils were given the opportunity to improve their self-esteem and develop leadership and teamwork skills. In response to the programme, the pupils said they had learned to respect the power of their voices and to speak for themselves. At the end of the week-long programme, they said they had been encouraged to start projects in their schools and communities that will make a difference to the lives of others in positive ways.
