Athlone Park motorist fumes over card cloning

An Athlone Park motorist is fuming after her petrol card was cloned, resulting in her ‘paying’ close on R4,000 towards the criminals’ car repair bill.

Tanya Jacobs used her card at two places in the last week – at a Twini fuel station and the Marianhill toll plaza.

“I’m usually quite vigilant when I pay with my card, and I watch attendants who swipe my card like a hawk,” said Tanya.  In spite of her efforts, the card was cloned, most likely at one of the two places.

The unwitting local realised what had happened when she received an SMS notification from her bank on Tuesday, informing her that R3,974 had been paid to an Umbogintwini car repair business. She called the business and got copies of the bill, which totaled R7,940. According to the repair business owner, the man who paid the remainder of the bill with a second card, which could also presumably be stolen.

Tanya has reported the matter to her bank, which is investigating. She warns card holders to be extra vigilant when using their cards.
