Dan Draper bowls comes to an end at Wanderers BC

Sunday’s breakfast trips attracted 24 teams in perfect conditions.

THE ever-popular Dan Draper tournament came to an end at Wanderers Bowling Club last Friday.

Possibly the longest running bowls event in the country, it is well supported by sponsors, ensuring that every team competing receives a prize.

At the start of proceedings, teams are auctioned off to highest bidders. If that team wins, the bidder scoops the jackpot.

This year, Errol Pienaar had the winning bid for the women’s team winners, and Jay Tilakdharee bought the winning men’s team in Doreen Salmond and Steve Van Rooyen respectively. Games were played in a festive but serious mood to a full 21 ends twice per day to piped music on all three greens. The event is played by men and women separately in teams of four. Daily session prizes were won on Monday by Lofty Cawthorne, Tuesday Linda Hewer and Arnie Harper, Wednesday by Bernice Wells and George Harris, Thursday by T Palmer and Greg Dorrofield, and Friday by S Erasmus and Norman Paskins.

The ‘monkey prize’, for the team ending in last position, went to Eileen Du Plessis for the women and Colin Howes for the men. The top four finishing teams in each section were: Fourth place: Joan Bruce and Coy Schrauwen; third place: Bridget White and Kim Hawkins; second place: D Smithard and Team Warwick, and the winners were Doreen Salmond and Steve Van Rooyen. Steve has won for the second year running with different leads.

In club competitions, Shaun McAlister beat Mitch Mitchley 21-16 and Clive Symons beat Neville Horner 21-10 in the men’s open singles.

Sunday’s breakfast trips attracted 24 teams in perfect conditions. The 60/40 board winners were Lorraine Du Preez and Ken Thomas (R40 each) while Hennie Geldenhuys and Archie Fisher took home the minor spoils (R20 each). Dennis Gericke will be roasting the pork. First session went to Ken Koch, Luvoyo Ngcobo and Alan Bruce with 2 + 14, 2nd session went the way of Peter Prenger, Jimmy Neill and Barry Mansfield with 2 + 9. Second place overall went to Bob Hayward, Jeff Bolt and Jo-Anne Jordaan with 4 + 14, and the winners on the day were Eric Kitchenbrand, Lionel de la Rey and Margaret Kitchenbrand with 4 + 23. The sportsman’s prize with 0-18 went to Dave Lloyd, Ernie Lochner and Hennie Geldenhuys.

Friday’s snowball of R1000 was not won as Pat McGlynn was not present. The various meat winners were Bernadette Amos (mutton pack), Danny Nel (deboned leg of lamb), Porky Hauptfleisch (rump steak), Dave Leuchar (chicken pack), Sharon Stephen (pork ribs) and Derek Stephens (chicken).

The club wishes and prays for miraculous results concerning Jean Edley (cancer) and Jumbo Nel (broken leg).
