Attempted burglary goes south as police pounce

Police quickly apprehend a Merebank burglar.

THE combined efforts of Wentworth SAP, Umlazi K9 Unit and the provincial task team led to the quick arrest of a man attempting to break in to a house in Merebank on Wednesday, 4 June.

A 24-year-old man was seen breaking in to a house in Sialkot Crescent. The witness contacted the police who quickly arrived on the scene and went in search of the man who had fled into a park behind the premises.

Warrant Officer Sookdhaw and Sergeants Nair and Wilkens chased on foot, while W/O Derrick Naicker from the provincial task team passed on information relating to the would-be thief’s appearance via radio communication. The man was found as he tried to cross the railway lines near South Coast Road, arrested and taken to Wentworth police station, where he was charged with housebreaking and burglary.

He appeared in Wentworth Court on Friday, 6 June and was remanded in police custody for investigations.

“The complainant was pleased with the quick response from the police and the arrest. The members involved are commended by the management of Wentworth SAP,” said communications officer, Lieutenant Gumede.
