NATALIA Garden Club celebrated its 29th birthday on Thursday, 10 April.

Moira Page, one of the founder members of the club, was asked to cut the cake.

Pieter du Plessis, contributed in no small way to a very entertaining morning with his interesting video presentation on nature and in particular on fireflies, which are rarely seen these days. There was also a plant sale, with some nice plants going at rock bottom prices.

Natalia Garden Club was started in 1945 by a handful of people from the Bluff Garden Club, which met in the evening. They wanted to get something going during the daytime.

The club started off with about 15 people and grew to just over 100 members in 2010. Sadly, membership has dropped again as older members died or moved away to retirement homes and so on. Currently there are about 65 members. Members of the pubic are invited to visit one of the meetings and enjoy a pleasant, social morning. They can then decide whether they would like to join. There is a charge of R10 which covers entry for visitors and refreshments.

Competitions results for April are as follows: Decorative: (Easter hat) M Jones 9,5, G Barnes 9, C Kotze 7. Best bloom or spray: N Brown, B McGeorge, C Kotze, L van Jaarsveld 10, J Huygens 9,5. Members are reminded of the call for sandwich fillings to be donated to the Methodist Church’s sandwiches for schools which are to be brought to the meeting. The following members must take two plates of snacks each: R Ndlovu, M Page, E Pickster, V Pigg, S Shaw, V Smith, T Grace.
