Brush cutter theft on the rise

Unsuspecting man conned by would-be customers.

Three men were arrested by Montclair SAP for armed robbery and possession of property suspected to be stolen on Sunday, 13 April.

A municipal worker saw the men trying to sell six brush cutters in Clairwood and identified them as stolen property. He alerted police who were patrolling the area. On being questioned by the police, the men were unable to give an explanation of how they came into possession of the items.

They were taken to the police station and were charged under section 36 and for possession of property suspected to be stolen. On further investigation, police linked the men to an armed robbery in Wentworth, where municipal workers were held at gunpoint and looted. Included in the stolen items were brush cutters.

The men appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on 15 April.

In another incident involving a brush cutter, a young man who is known to walk around Woodlands with his brush cutter looking for jobs, was conned by three men who stole his machine and personal belongings. The young man was walking in Fairbridge Road at about 9.30am on Saturday, 12 April when a white VW Polo with three men inside pulled up next to him. The men told him they had a job for him and he should go with them.

He obliged and went with them. A few minutes down the road, the would-be customers turned on him and pointed a gun at him and demanded his belongings. They drove off, leaving the man on the side of the road.
