God’s ‘little’ creatures – Eyed-flower Mantis

Photos and information supplied by Warren K Dick.

Have you ever seen one of these before? I am guessing probably not, and that’s simply because of their awesome camouflage. They are actually quite common in the Durban area and this one was photographed in my Bluff garden. If left undisturbed in the garden one will have the privileged to watch these awesome creatures grow over a few months, till they finally become adults (with wings) and fly off to find a mate.

They derive their common name because of the “Eye” shaped markings found on them, and the fact that they look rather flower like and will spend most of their lives on flowers in wait for unsuspecting insects.
