20/22 distinctions for gritty graduate

Bluff resident, Roxanne Walker (22) made light work of her studies by achieving 20 out of 22 distinctions while studying towards her human resources degree.

The former Kenmont High School pupil matriculated with a diploma entry into university in 2009. Seeing the need to change the negative stigmas within the youth pertaining to education, she decided to work hard in her studies.

“I am motivated by a passion to help people and develop our society. Many children drop out of school and have little self-belief. I wanted to change the negativity that I heard from youngsters, by working hard and showing them that an average student can persevere and become a top student day,” said Roxanne.

After completing her diploma and receiving a Cum Laude award, she set her sights on a B-Tech degree. She completed her B-Tech degree with a full complement of distinctions, ranging between 92% and 100%.

“I worked diligently and sat up late studying and doing research so I could educate myself and become skilful and knowledgeable about my subjects,” said Roxanne. She attributes her good results to diligence, attending lectures and dedication. Even though her studies consumed a large quantity of her time, Roxanne was also involved in ministry work and community outreach.

“My plans are to work for now in order to gain some experience, as I am fresh out of university. After two years I would like to return to my studies and complete my masters in human resource management. I also plan to get married and move forward with my life.”

The avid swimmer and motorbike rider advises youngsters to work and believe in themselves. “Do not allow the negativity around you to consume you, but above all keep praying and seeking help from God because He answers all prayers.”

Roxanne’s graduation ceremony for her B-Tech degree from the Durban University of Technology is on Monday, 14 April.
