THE Rawson’s Property sponsored fours, skins event took place in blazing hot sun last Sunday, when a green full of players competed for a variety of prizes.

Coming out on top was the team of Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Terry Brown and Gordon Chislett with 18 points out of a possible 20 and a shot difference of plus 29.

They chose the Texan steaks over the R100 Spur vouchers which then went to second placed team comprising Clive Du Plooy, Nicola and Charles Bauristhene and Debbie Nortje on 16 + 20. The third placed winners, on 16 + 14 and getting R50 Spur vouchers were Lofty Cawthorne, Archie Fisher, Ken Koch and Bob Hayward, while the R50 Wimpy vouchers went the way of fourth placed Clive Symons, Thomas Wessels, Mike and Jackie Freeman who scored 10 – 3.

The best first session with a 10 + 13 went to Arnie Harper, Mike Flack, Lorraine Du Preez and Gwen Tait and the best second session went the way of perch holders Anthony and Robbie Carr, Tommy Simpkins and Tanya Carr with 9 + 12. If only they had achieved that sort of score in their first session, they could have walked off with the current ‘perch’ money of R240.

The sportsman’s prize for the lowest score of the day went to the Smits and Kitchenbrands who managed 3 – 24. All the remaining teams received prizes in the way of caps, courtesy of Rawson’s Properties, or meal discount vouchers courtesy of John Dory’s. 60/40 board winners were Ron Gillespie and Jeff Bolt (R40 each), while Honey Kitchenbrand and the threesome of Tommy, Jeff and Rob won the second places of R20 each. Taegen Carr won the pork roast and a delighted Mike Freeman won the whisky raffle.

During the week, only one club competition was played being the men’s drawn trips between Robin Grobler, Chris Klopper and Jeff Bolt who were severely beaten 33-6 (with three ends to spare) by Dennis Gericke, Bob Hayward and Eric Redman who will now play Steve Van Rooyen, Peter Tayfield and Johan Nel in the final of this event.

Last Wednesday, roadrunners pairs was held in very hot conditions. First past the post were Dave McCann and Eric Miller with 10+33, with Lofty Cawthorne and Ron Jackson in second place on 10+13. Prizes were awarded for each of three skins: Clive Symons and Shaun McAlister the first +9, Chris Pozyn and Lorraine Smith the second on + 11 and Bill Addinall and Eric Kitchenbrand the third on +9. Chris Pozyn also won the meat mix of chicken, mince and wors. Clive Symons and Maria Cavanagh shared the spoils from the 60/40 board. Nobody chose 7, 8 and 9 to win the lotto which is thus a carryover. Bill Addinall celebrated his 75th birthday.

On Saturday, 12 men’s teams opposed each other in a ‘league trials situation’. Skips consulted with the selectors afterwards and certain helpful information was obtained, which hopefully will result in compatible and competent teams being selected for the league which gets underway on Saturday, 1 March. Watch the notice board for selections in the near future.

Upcoming events: Night league continues on Tuesday and Thursday and Lyn Wild’s open pairs is on Wednesday morning. The mixed drawn fours is carded to get underway on Saturday afternoon, and continues on Sunday all day. Entry form is on the board, but as it has to be drawn this week, be quick. The men’s competition secretary Mike Flack has decided to get this year’s club comps played using Saturdays and Sundays, so those players who do play out have the simple choice to either play out or enter the club competition, but don’t try to do both. The choice is yours, and it is hoped that you will choose to be loyal to your own club competitions. ‘Honey’ has specially asked women to note that entry forms for all the 2014 women’s competitions are on the board requiring your attention. Dates of play will be advised later.

Last Friday, Ron Parsonage lost out on R1,800 when his number was drawn, so it escalates to R1,900 for next week, when, incidentally, from 6pm the live band will be “F,N,RITS” a top local, rock solid dance band. The various meat winners on Friday were: Mutton pack Mark Jackson, chicken pack John Campbell, sirloin steak Troy Simpkins, pork ribs Jeff Bolt, chicken Graham Jeffs.

Members are reminded that subs are now due, and must be paid by end March at the latest.

Snippet: Today’s snippet is taken verbatim from the booklet entitled ‘The Etiquette of Bowls’ and is a fitful reminder for current times. Sections 3.3. The Competition Secretaries: “This is perhaps the most thankless job in the club. Assist them by honouring your commitments and help them to complete their full programme. Acquaint yourself with the conditions of play for each tournament you enter.” Section 3.4 The Selectors. “Selectors do not have an easy task. It is the selection committee’s task to select teams on merit and compatibility and club members should accept when they are chosen to play. If it is necessary to omit usually good players, or perhaps select them for a lower team, it is good etiquette for the convenor of the selection committee to inform the players concerned and explain to them the reason for the committee’s decision. It is etiquette for the players to accept the decisions made and not to discredit them in gossip”.
