Copper thefts on the increase

BRIGHTON Beach SAP urges residents to be aware of suspicious people, as copper thefts have increased.

Cases are being reported predominately in Brighton Beach, Fynnlands and Oceanview within the business sector. Transformers, starter motors and copper cables are the most popular items, according to Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

Stolen copper is transported in vehicles, such as bakkies, trolleys, pushcarts, black bags or in blankets. “The community is urged to be on the lookout for people walking in the streets with objects concealed in a suspicious manner and report them to their local police station,” said Cpt Le Roux.

“They should take note of the street name, direction headed, gender, race and the person’s clothing when making these reports. If approached with proposals to purchase these items, reject the offer and report the incident.”

Contact Brighton Beach SAP on 031-451-8059/60 or call 10111. “Brighton Beach SAP urges the community to support the police in combating copper theft by reporting offenders,” said Cpt Le Roux.
