Open dance auditions for youth

THE non-profit Wentworth and Culture Organisation will hold open dance auditions for the Dance Movement project at 9am on Saturday, 18 January at 51 Treasure Beach Road at the Transhaven Centre in Treasure Beach.

Youth aged between five and 18 years-old are invited to attend and learn choreographed routines in hip hop and international styles such as street jazz.

Dance Movement is headed by multi-award winning choreographer, Jarryd Watson who started the project in 2007 and created a platform for youth to express themselves through dance.

During the course of the year, dancers have an opportunity to train in styles such as hip hop, street jazz, break dancing, contemporary and tap dancing and will participate in workshops, festivals, productions, competitions and dance exams.

“I believe this is an amazing opportunity for youth who are passionate about dance and the arts. Through Dance Movement they can develop a repertoire for themselves,” said Jarryd.

Since the inception of the project, Dance Movement has garnered many accolades including travelling to the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, the UDO World Championships street dance competition in Scotland and England and recently the Broadway Dance Centre in New York, USA .

For his contribution and development of dance in KZN, Jarryd has received prestigious awards. In 2011 he received the first Eric Shababalala dance champion award at the Jomba Festival and in 2012 received the Sapref community development and sustainability award. Last year at the KZN Dance Link Durban Dance awards he received the Ubuntu dance award.

“The arts are so viable and imperative for our youth and artists in the community, but there is still a lack of funding. Being an art practitioner in this industry and creating all the works I do is very difficult, but despite these challenges we continue to push on and look forward to an exciting year ahead.”

Book early for auditions to avoid disappointment. Contact Jarryd on 082-683-9665.
