Army of patrols needed to stop Bluff crime

“IT’S easy to stop crime,” according to Bluff Community Orientated Policing (COP) chairman, Rake Jeeves.

According to him, presently less than 1% of the Bluff population of 44,000 have joined COP and less than 1% donates towards the organisation. “If only 10% joined COP and gave of one to two hours of their time a month and 10% donated R100 per month to the Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU), we would have an army patrolling the suburb; reacting to emergencies and making arrests and the criminals wouldn’t stand a chance,” said Jeeves.

In the past 30 days, COP members have attended to three armed robberies; two assaults; two hijackings; one car theft; two thefts; one attempted theft; 12 break-ins; three attempted break-ins; two thefts of copper pipes and one of lead; storm water grid thefts; water theft; scam water department workers; one yard hopping incident and a murder.

“The frustrating part is that it’s so easy to bring crime down to zero; everything is in place to do this, but we need the support of the public. We are fortunate in that we have a good team of SAP members at our local station, but there are not enough of them and they can’t patrol every street.”

Over the course of its five years in existence, COP has prevented thousands of crimes and members have made numerous arrests. “If we work together, we can make the Bluff a safe place for all residents. I’m building an army, who will join me?”
