Alert constable nabs burglar

AN alert Brighton Beach SAP constable identified and arrested a man wanted for a house robbery that took place in 2009.

While out on patrol on Greys Inn Road, on the morning of Saturday, 4 January, Constable Mlungidi Chiya from the Brighton Beach SAP Community Service Centre noticed a man who resembled a suspect wanted for a house robbery that took place in March 2009 in McTvish Road. The man repeatedly assaulted a man in his home with a panga before tearing a gold ring off his finger and fleeing with the ring and a high pressure cleaner.

Cst Chiya arrested the man and took him to Brighton Beach police station, where an identikit confirmed him as the wanted man. He was further linked to the crime by finger prints taken at the scene.

The 30-year-old appeared in Durban Court on Monday, 6 January, charged with house robbery and was remanded to Westville Prison to await sentencing on 27 January.

Brighton Beach SAP management commends Cst Chiya for his vigilance, which led to the arrest of the wanted house robber.
