The competition had many rounds of elimination. Rishay came out first in the Umlazi District to put him through into the Inter-District final where he was the only learner from his district to place in the top three.

The spelling bee was hosted by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture unit in partnership with the eThekwini Libraries, Pinetown and Umlazi Districts, and the Umkhomazi Circuit. The event aimed to instil a reading culture among Grade 4 to 6 learners for academic excellence while at the same time instilling a sense of healthy competition among different participants.

Rishay was proud of his achievement. “I felt very happy, excited and overwhelmed because something like this has never happened. I couldn’t believe that I was able to represent my school and community on such a big stage,” he said.

His spelling bee journey started last year after his mom asked him to try something different. “After my first spelling bee, my mom saw that I did well and encouraged me to continue,” he said.

Rishay shared that his secret to memorising all the different words is through repetition. “When my mom is busy in the kitchen, I take out my words, read them, write them down and say them out loud to her. I just keep doing it over and over,” he said.

Rishay said he learned so much from the competition in both the local district and inter-district spelling bees, but his biggest takeaway was the new words he learnt which he has since implemented in his vocabulary.

His hard work and determination paid off as evident with his achievement.
