Crest of success: Majorettes team score big at championships

The Durban Crest Majorettes, representing The Bluff community, secured themselves a podium finish on the national stage.

THE Durban Crest Majorettes soared to new heights as they competed in the Majorette-Sport World Federation (MWF) World Majorette Championships and South African Majorettes and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) National Championships held from September 21 to 28 in Cape Town.

Bonny Fourie, one of the coaches, said this talented team of 25 young girls have cemented themselves as the third-best team in the country.

The girls firstly competed at the MWF World Majorette on September 21 where they came second in the small drill category.

The Durban Crest Majorettes also finished third in the league for Champion of Champions during the SAMCA National Championships at Erica Park Stadium in Belhar from September 22 to 28. The girls competed in six categories: mace, baton, flag, pom non-prop, small drill and large drill.

Fourie congratulated the girls on their dedication and hard work throughout the gruelling 2024 season. “Our bronze medals and Champion of Champions trophy may have been awarded on September 27, but they were winners throughout the 12 months of training and competition,” she said.

Fourie said their vision since they started training this season was to secure a top-three place in the country, and they have managed to accomplish that.

Fourie added that the girls have trained around 17 hours a week, including eight-hour Saturday sessions and competed in numerous provincial competitions, and they even took the title of KZN Champions in August, to secure a top-three spot this season.

“It has been tough, but the girls have made themselves, their families and coaches incredibly proud,” she said.

The team would also like to thank The Bluff community for their endless support because without the community they would never be able to compete in the National Championships. The team also gave a special thanks to The Bluff SuperSPAR and Bluff Hillside Mall for their assistance in raising funds.

“Every person who put a coin or note into their collection bags, or who made an electronic donation, played a part in these 25 young girls being able to live their dreams this year. We salute you,” she said.
