Mobile clinic returns to Montclair

The KZN Department of Health now provides much-needed medical care to Montclair residents through its mobile clinic services.

IN a significant development for Montclair’s healthcare services, the KZN Department of Health has reintroduced its mobile clinic service, which started today (August 30), following its suspension by eThekwini Municipality early this month.

This move comes in response to the eThekwini Municipality’s decision to transfer the municipal clinic back to the provincial authorities due to funding constraints.

The mobile clinic will be stationed at Traybang Hall, the same venue used previously, beginning at 09:00.

Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter said this location has been chosen to ensure continuity of service and convenience for local residents.

“The mobile clinic aims to provide essential healthcare services to the community, and its availability will be contingent on demand. If the response is positive, the clinic will operate on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, offering a regular and accessible healthcare option for Montclair’s residents.

“We apologise for the short notice regarding this update. Confirmation of the clinic’s schedule has only recently been finalised. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to seeing how this service will benefit the Montclair community,” Hegter.

The transition to transferring clinics to the provincial health department began in 2022, following eThekwini Municipality’s decision to hand over 59 clinics to provincial authorities.

There has been a public outcry in Montclair following the announcement made that the mobile clinic, which has been running two to three days a week, ceased its operation – and this according to residents will cause a huge inconvenience to the community.

People who were relying on the mobile clinic for emergency management of chronic illness, HIV testing and counselling will no longer have to travel to nearby clinics and hospitals to access those services in Clairwood, The Bluff and Wentworth.
