The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife's scenic annual walk led participants through Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve, providing nature enthusiasts a glimpse of the natural fauna and flora.

THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) held its annual Walk in the Wild 5km event on August 25 at the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve, attracting a remarkable 694 participants – a significant increase from 141 of the previous year. This year’s event was a triumph, raising over R81 000 to support the organisation’s efforts.

Participants enjoyed the scenic beauty of the reserve on a 5km loop, with many soaking up the sunny weather as they connected with nature. Clint Halkett-Siddall, Crow’s director, described the atmosphere as vibrant, thanks to DJ Spike’s lively music, a variety of food and beverages and the arts and crafts stalls catering to the diverse crowd. “The inclusion of educational stalls from various conservation groups and non-profits added an insightful touch to the day,” Halkett-Siddall noted.

Success of the event

Halkett-Siddall expressed his joy at the strong turnout and the event’s overall success. “We were thrilled with the support and the number of participants. The vendors were excellent, and it was heartening to see everyone come together for a worthy cause,” he said. The festive atmosphere was further enhanced as participants posed for selfies in front of Walk in the Wild selfie boards and banners, creating a joyful and family-friendly environment.

Prizes

The first 500 walkers were gifted commemorative T-shirts and received goodie bags at the end of the event. “Crow offered various prizes, including awards for the best animal costume, the oldest participant, the best wildlife photograph, and the individual who created the most buzz on social media. Additional prizes were given to those who collected the most litter along the trail and the top three finishers,” Halkett-Siddall added.

Crow’s stall was bustling with activity, showcasing merchandise, the first sale of their 2025 wildlife calendar, and information about joining their Guardian programme, with new members receiving tote bags. They also hosted a raffle for a one-night bed-and-breakfast stay at the Radisson Blu.

Halkett-Siddall expressed heartfelt thanks to the sponsors who were instrumental in the event’s success. “We are incredibly grateful to all the sponsors and participants whose support made this day possible. It was truly a fantastic event,” he said, reflecting on the community’s generosity and engagement.
