This celebration, dedicated to promoting literacy and cultural heritage, united children and adults for a day filled with music, dance, stories and games.

Dr Gcina Mhlophe, the founding director of Gcinamasiko Arts & Heritage Trust, emphasised her commitment to fostering literacy and community engagement. “We are very passionate about promoting literacy in our country. We are always proud to promote learning with a lot of fun.”

Sindiswa Zulu recited the late Zulu King Zwelithini’s praise songs.

The ‘Kids Should Be …’ event was more than a celebration of arts and heritage; it was a call to action for children to engage in diverse activities. Mhlophe said, “We say children should sing, dance, read, tell stories, bake and play.”

Children participated in various activities reflecting the event’s name, including playing indigenous and contemporary games, performing poetry, and engaging in quizzes about heritage icons, pioneers and heroes of South Africa. A musical activity had the crowd divided into drummers, shakers, sticks, and tin can players to create rhythm and melody.

Snanlo Kheama was in the drummers’ group for the musical act.

The event attracted a diverse audience, including attendees who travelled from Johannesburg to experience the magic of the Storytelling Tree. Since its inception in July 2019, the Storytelling Tree has become a beloved fixture, drawing performers and guests alike.

Mhlophe expressed her gratitude for the support and hard work that made the event possible and hinted at an upcoming event in October.
