South Durban’s princesses treated like royalty for a day

AN ‘It’s all about you’ empowerment workshop last month in honour of the 16 days of activism served as the kick-off event for the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management’s (ABM) ward-based women’s dialogues.

About 300 women from 10 wards within the SDB were treated as queens and princesses for a day, with pampering, skills development and inspirational messages. Each adorned with a tiara, the invited women were those who normally don’t get the opportunity to attend such events.

Speakers from the KZN Network on Violence Against Women and Children, the Gender Commission and the National Prosecuting Authority gave inspirational talks; SAP communications officer, Danny Verstel gave a basic self-defence demonstration and Kamini Pillaye from the Safer Cities Unit taught flower arranging. Beauty treatments were provided by Spoil Yourself and the volunteers hailed from the Wentworth Organisation of Women.

“It was heart-warming to see their excitement as the women were treated to entertainment and free massages and beauty treatments,” said SDB ABM social development co-ordinator, Anitha Govender.

SDB ABM manager, Eurakha Singh thanked the invited women for the sacrifices they make in their lives and for coping with the difficult circumstances they face as breadwinners, single parents and sometimes abused women. She also thanked the project steering committee that was set up to plan the event.
