Help Bluff bowler represent South Africa at IDB Championships

Among other accolades, Mandy Sargent's most memorable achievement is representing her country at the 1996 Paralympic Games.

MANDY Sargent, a seasoned bowler with cerebral palsy, has been chosen to represent South Africa proudly at the forthcoming International Bowls for the Disabled tournament in Johannesburg, slated from May 18 to 31.

Nevertheless, the 57-year-old athlete encounters a formidable obstacle in gathering the necessary funds to cover her trip expenses.

Since childhood, Sargent has defied the constraints of her cerebral palsy diagnosis to pursue her love for sports. Starting her athletic journey at the age of six, she initially excelled in track and field before finding her passion in bowls due to her condition’s limitations.

Reflecting on her journey into bowls, Sargent shared, “When I started, I had not yet joined a club, and one of my friends invited me to try it out with him, and since then, I just couldn’t stop.” Over time, she became associated with various clubs, eventually finding her home at the Wentworth Bowling Club.

Sargent’s commitment and talent have earned her numerous accolades, including representing various provinces and proudly wearing the Springbok colours on international stages, notably at the 1996 Paralympic Games.

As she readies herself to represent her nation once more, Sargent faces the hurdle of raising R27 000 to cover her travel expenses, encompassing flights, lodging and transportation during the tournament.

Pat McGlynn, the vice president of the Wentworth Bowling Club, has issued a call for support, urging local bowling clubs, businesses, sports enthusiasts and individuals to contribute whatever they can to aid Sargent in her quest.

“We are rallying the community to unite and support Mandy as she embarks on representing South Africa at this esteemed international event. Every donation, irrespective of size, will have an impact,” emphasised McGlynn.

To initiate the fundraising drive, the Wentworth Bowling Club will host an event on May 4, open to all interested parties. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a game for a nominal fee, with cash prizes available.

For those willing to contribute or seek further information, please contact Pat McGlynn on 063 095 7331.
