Suspected car-theft gang nabbed on The Bluff

Car-breaking implements and computer boxes were found in the suspects’ vehicle.

TWO suspects were arrested after a car they were travelling in crashed into a truck on Marine Drive on The Bluff on Monday (March 4).

The suspects, aged 21 and 25, were arrested during a joint operation between members of The Bluff Community Policing Forum, security companies, SAPS and metro police.

The members were acting on information received about a suspicious car parked at a shopping centre on Tara Road.

Public relations officer for The Bluff CPF, David Sanders, said in a statement that the information was shared, and CPF members, as well as TRSS, proceeded to the centre.

“Upon arrival, the suspects noticed the members and fled from the parking [lot]. A car chase ensued along Tara Road, up Beach Road and right onto Marine Drive where the suspects’ vehicle lost control – smashing into a truck and bakkie. Fortunately, no one was injured,” said Sanders.

Sanders said the suspects then jumped out of their vehicle and fled on foot towards Kontwin Place. The police, CPF members and other law enforcement agencies gave chase on foot. The suspects were apprehended near the Harlequins grounds.

Upon searching the suspects’ car, the officers found suspected car-breaking implements, computer boxes and keys. The suspects were handed over to Brighton Beach SAPS for further investigation.

Police spokesperson for Brighton Beach SAPS, Captain Louise le Roux, said the suspects were charged with attempted ‘theft of motor vehicle’, ‘possession of car-breaking implements’ and ‘reckless and negligent driving’. The pair is expected to appear in court soon.
