One of two things – ‘I will be a chef’

Imari Kenya-James’ passion for cooking leads her to meet professional chefs at Fireblade Aviation in Gauteng.

IN a heartwarming tale of resilience and determination, seven-year-old Imari Kenya-James refuses to let a diagnosis of meningitis and hydrocephalus hinder her dream of becoming a chef.

From the moment she was born, Imari faced the challenges of meningitis, followed by hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is the buildup of excessive fluid in ventricles deep within the brain. Her journey was marked by numerous surgeries, starting at a mere two months old and continuing until she was one.

Despite the bleak prognosis given by doctors, Imari’s spirit remained unbroken, and she surpassed medical expectations with each hurdle she conquered.

Throughout her health struggles, Imari discovered solace and strength in the kitchen. Inspired by her aunt, a chef, and fuelled by her own passion for cooking, she found a sense of purpose and joy amid adversity. Her mother, Iman James, emphasised Imari’s resilience, highlighting her daughter’s journey as a testament to faith and determination.

Imari not only pursued her culinary aspirations but also became a beacon of hope for others facing health challenges. Her story, shared by Iman, is aimed at raising awareness about her condition, shedding light on a journey filled with resilience and triumph.

“I think it was important to create awareness because before her diagnosis, we had never heard about this condition. She had her last surgery at one year, and I had to witness her missing out on so many milestones. Being able to see her do what she was told she wouldn’t be able to do is just incredible,” said Iman.

Beyond her culinary pursuits, Imari’s presence transcended into the digital realm, where she garnered a significant following on TikTok. With over 190 000 followers, many became familiar with Imari and her famous catchphrase, ‘One of two things’. Imari’s influence spread, catching the attention of Fireblade Aviation, who were moved by her inspiring story.

Inviting her to Gauteng for a collaborative cooking experience with professional chefs, Fireblade Aviation sought to uplift Imari’s dreams and inspire others to reach for the stars.
