Standing united against gender-based violence

Brighton Beach Police Station's Crime Prevention Unit will be distributing pamphlets every Saturday for the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

EXPOSING the urgent need for interventions to fight the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV), volunteers at the Brighton Beach Victim-Friendly Centre joined various organisations in the south Durban area to support victims.

Demonstrations calling for action kicked off the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign, which commenced on November 16 and will extend until December 25. There were also calls for action to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations to help end all types of violence against women and girls.

This year, the theme is ‘Invest to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls’.

Sergeant Xolani Mrawu from Brighton Beach Police Station joined the demonstration.

Chantal Bransgrove-Bower, Brighton Beach coordinator from Brighton Beach Victim-Friendly Centre, said that the crime prevention unit at Brighton Beach Police Station will be doing pamphlet distribution every Saturday for the next 16 days.

While dealing with the heartbreaking circumstances of victims of GBV at the facility, we want to get to the heart of the problem and take the information about how to spot the signs, and where to get help from, to the people who really need it.

“In every country and culture, more action is needed to ensure women in all their diversity live free of violence and coercion. We need every resident to play a key role in bringing attention to and responding to violence against women as a public health, gender equality and human rights issue,” Bransgrove-Bower added.
