Fairvale’s teen pool champ competes in tourney

Ethan Chetty was named the U19 8-Ball and U19 9-Ball champion at the KZN American 8-Ball and 9-Ball Junior Championships.

SOUTH Africa’s 2023 U18 and U23 pool champion and Fairvale Secondary School learner, Ethan Chetty, who made his mark in the cue sporting world when he scooped the title, will compete in the 2023 Hawley Cup tournament, this week.

The Grade 12 lad has not stopped stacking up his accolades and was recently also named both the U19 8-Ball and U19 9-Ball champion at the KZN American 8-Ball and 9-Ball Junior Championships.

The 17-year-old, who resides in Silverglen in Chatsworth, plays competitive cue sports at Friendly 8-Pool Academy in Silverglen and said he aims to continue his winning streak by bringing home the cup.

The Hawley Cup is held from October 16 to 23, at Montecasino in Johannesburg, and is a dedication tournament to honour the immeasurable impact made by the late Peter Hawley, the first president of the South African Confederation of Cue Sport.

The competition will be hosted in conjunction with World Pool–Billiard Association and Blackball International, and Ethan will play against leading cueists who will be staking a claim on the cup’s guaranteed prize pool of R250 000.

Ethan holds various cue sport titles and was dubbed ‘Killer Laaitie’ for his exceptional skills in cue sport, and has been continuing his success in the cue sporting world.

Bagging an array of trophies and titles since he entered as a junior in competitive cue sport, Ethan has played in various tournaments and championships in South Africa and has travelled to different countries, including China and Morocco. He has won the U18 National Championships three years consecutively and aims to inspire youngsters to try their hand at cue sport.
