No bail for Wentworth cop’s alleged killers

The case was adjourned for further investigation, and the accused are expected to appear back in court in November.

THE three men accused of killing metro police officer, Superintendent Errol Ogle, were denied bail in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court last week.

Lieutenant-Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, Hawks spokesperson, said the formal bail application of Sabelo Mncube (42), Mzomuhle Lawrence Gamede (38) and Phakamani Mlungisi Mpanza (33) was successfully opposed.

The men are charged with murder, armed robbery, hijacking and kidnapping.

Ogle (51) of Wentworth was shot and killed as he tried to stop a truck that was driving on an oncoming lane but was unexpectedly caught in the middle of an alleged hijacking while travelling on the M7, near the Hans Dettman off-ramp, on July 20.

He sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and died at the scene.

Ogle, who served in the metro police for more than two decades, was also robbed of his service firearm. The suspects allegedly then fled his marked vehicle, which was later found abandoned in Pinetown.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mhlongo said the three accused were arrested by members of the Durban Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit in the Durban area, and in Estcourt, within a short space of time.

The matter was adjourned for further investigation. The accused are expected to appear back in court on November 2.
