Jarryd Watson, an artistic director, and founder of Dance Movement, which is administered under WACO, said the festival aims to create a platform to elevate and empower women from all walks of life in society and to recognise them for the exemplary work they do in impacting the upliftment of communities and societies.

“The festival will boast a full day of performances from a variety of women artists, young girls and artists living with disabilities, showcasing their talents in dance, music, literature, poetry and theatre acting. An awards ceremony will also be held to recognise women who are fine examples of social transformation with the positive influence in society they hold,” he said.

Watson said one of the main artists performing is former Wentworth resident, now living in Cape Town, Lorin Sookool, who is a dance practitioner that creates contemporary dance works as a practice based on decolonial theory.

“At the opening of the awards ceremony audiences will have an opportunity to watch Lorin perform.

However, during her visit, young dancers and artists will have an opportunity to work with her at a free three-day training and development workshop, where she will share her artistry and training methodologies in a creative space for skills development.

“I am so proud to present this festival, and so grateful for the partnership with the World Business Clinic and Durban South Entrepreneurs who share the same vision of this festival in celebrating women this month.” he said.

Watson said the festival will also include guest speakers, performances from Dance Movement and other artists, as well as stalls.

“There will be networking opportunities and exposure for women and other members of the community to business, learnerships and bursary opportunities,” he said.

Watson said proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards the organisation’s development of artistic programmes that they conduct at the centre for disadvantaged youth, children and people living with disabilities.

Ticket prices are R40. For more information on ticket bookings or the festival, contact Jarryd on 082 683 9665.
