Organising secretary and contributing writer for the project, Jeeven Padayachee, said the project has brought together a team of passionate amateur researchers, writers, and historians who have tirelessly worked to uncover untold stories, gather historical data, and curate a comprehensive account of Merebank’s past.

“We aim to engage attendees by showcasing the book’s objectives, highlighting key historical events, recounting personal anecdotes, including that of Merebank’s residents, many of whom, have been at the coalface of the struggle to liberate South Africa from the yoke of apartheid.

“Our team will be sharing insights into the research process, challenges faced, and the significance of documenting local history. Moreover, we will emphasise the importance of cultural preservation and community participation in preserving the collective memory of Merebank and our overriding objective of revitalising Merebank back to its former glory,” Padayachee said.

Members of the Merebank Book Project will host a presentation at the Mazisi Kunene Stage on August 13, from 10:00 to 11:00.

“We are honored to have been invited to present at the prestigious book fair, which provides the perfect platform for us to share the Merebank Book Project with a wider audience. This will be an excellent opportunity to shed light on the significance of local history projects and promote a sense of pride and belonging within the community,” added Padayachee.
