Man nabbed for robbing teen to apply for bail

Detectives from Wentworth police station are following up on leads and hopes to arrest the other suspects.

A 23-year-old man who allegedly robbed a teenager of his cellphone is expected to apply for bail in the Durban Magistrates Court this week.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, Wentworth police spokesperson, said the learner, 15, was accosted by three knife-wielding men on foot while walking to his home from school along Dacca Road in Merebank, recently.

“A local security company who were alerted and responded managed to apprehend one of the suspects. However, the other suspects managed to evade arrest. The learner was able to positively identify the suspect and he was thereafter handed over to the police and charged with robbery. The suspect was found in possession of the learner’s cellphone and a knife believed to have been used during the robbery.

“We were informed the suspects have been targeting school children and robbing them of their cellphones before and after school in the area. Our detectives are busy following up on leads and hope to arrest the other suspects who evade the arrests soon,” he said.

The suspect was remanded into prison custody until his court appearance.
