Motorists urged to take precaution as theft from vehicles increases

Police are urging motorists to not leave valuables on the car seats as it can attract criminals.

WENTWORTH police urge residents to be more vigilant following an increase in theft from motor vehicle cases reported in recent weeks.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the station’s spokesperson said Merebank central, was most affected, between midnight and 05:00.

“We have had reports of vehicle parts such as batteries being stolen, as well tyres and vehicle signage. We are urging vehicle owners to ensure that before leaving their vehicle, the doors and windows are locked and the alarm is activated.

“Do not leave valuables, such as laptops, cellphones, watches and other expensive items on the vehicle seats. We also urge owners to ensure that their property and surroundings are well-lighted at night and that their vehicles are parked in a secured place,” he said.

Gumede said police have increased patrols in affected areas in order to curb these crimes.

“However, the community is encouraged to report any suspicious activities in their area. Let us fight and act against crime together,” he said.
