Business robberies rise as festive season approaches

BUSINESS robberies are on the increase as the festive season approaches, with Clairwood and Jacobs being prime targets.

Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said business robberies have increased within the Brighton Beach policing area. “These crimes are predominantly being committed late in the afternoon, when large amounts of cash are still on hand on the premises.”

The robbers operate in groups of up to eight, wearing balaclavas and firearms. With this increase, Brighton Beach SAP has issued the following safety guidelines for business owners:

* Try to avoid the build-up of large amounts of cash by using drop-safes. Take special precaution when transporting money and stagger cash-ups. The fewer people who know the details of the cash protection procedures, the better.

* Employ a PSIRA-accredited security company and install CCTV cameras, especially at cash points and entrance and exit routes and a silent panic alarm system.

* Urge staff to be extra vigilant of people lingering around the premises and to alert management of any suspicious activities or people. The management team should then call 10111 to alert the police. Take note of the number of people and their race, gender, clothing, height and any distinguishing features. When cars are used, take note of the colour, make and registration number.

* Condition staff to stay calm during a robbery, not to make any sudden movements and do what they are told by the robbers.
