LOOK: Young scientists in the making showcase their talent at Eskom Expo

The aim of the expo is to bring out the curiosity in learners, to identify problems and find solutions, be it through engineering, surveys or investigations.

AMBITIOUS learners had an opportunity to showcase their inventions at Africa’s largest science fair, Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

The Umlazi Circuit district level science expo was held at Grosvenor Boys’ High School recently.

The Eskom Expo, which is a non-profit organisation established in 1980, promotes an interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) fields by hosting science and engineering fairs throughout the country.

Dr Nathasia Naidoo, the departmental head for maths and sciences at the school, said they had successfully facilitated a workshop for educators in April this year.

“The workshop was aimed at developing teachers to start a science club and prepare the learners to participate in the district level expo, as well as the upcoming regional level expo,” she said.

Grosvenor Boys’ High School Grade 9 learners, Brian Cele, Kayden Govender, Luke Quissana, and Ronewa Mavhina, showcase their creation, a bascule bridge.

Naidoo, who is the Umlazi Circuit Eskom Expo coordinator, said at the expo, which encourages learners from Grade 4 to 12 to participate, they had 45 learners from six different schools showcase their inventions.

“At the district level expo, all participants are developed and encouraged to participate at regional level, where we host about 400 projects from around 90 different schools. At the regional level, learner projects are judged and are selected to go further in the competition,” she said.

Naidoo said the expo provides youth the opportunity of engaging in high level scientific research while still in the schooling system.

Umkomaas Secondary School learners, Thamyka Naidoo, Thia Talia Rambaross, and Percival Khathi, showcase their inventions.

“The aim of the expo is to bring out the curiosity in learners, to identify problems and find solutions, be it through engineering, surveys or investigations. It also affords learners the ability to be critical thinkers as well as problem solvers. It also allows learners to explore potential study and career paths paving the way for their future,” she said.

The regional expo will take place on July 31 and August 1. To register for the regional expo, visit https://www.exposcience.co.za
