WATCH: Autism centre gears up for family fun sports day

The family fun and sports day will create awareness about what it takes to raise a child with autism.

THE Colours of Bliss Autism Centre, a first of its kind in south Durban, is geared up to host a two-fold celebration, inviting families to commemorate the centre’s first anniversary, as well as their first family fun and sports day.

Residents will be able to participate in the non-competitive events along with the centre’s special needs learners and their families, who have been excitedly preparing to participate and interact with the community.

The event is aimed at encouraging interaction and integration between families in the community, and children with autism.

Helper Thembi Ntlangulela assists Zarah Kuppau with training for the event.

The centre was started in Merebank in 2022 by founder, Kubashnie Padayachee, a teacher, who left her profession in 2015 to tend to the needs of her daughter, Saiantha, who was diagnosed with autism.

Finding herself creating the non-profit organisation in Warangal Road, Kubashnie began providing children with autism with a happy, safe place to learn. The centre now operates from Highbury Road in Brighton Beach until they are able to secure a bigger premises.

“The family fun and sports day will create awareness on what it takes to raise a child with autism. Residents can participate in the event, as well as sponsor events, host a stall or simply show up to support us. Entrance is free of charge and we have been networking with primary schools in the Merebank area, who have vowed to join us in our mission to create awareness about autism.

“We encourage schools in south Durban to contact us so that learners and their families can join us. To promote our family fun sports day, we have been hosting various initiatives and awareness campaigns so that the community is aware of our goals,” Kubashnie said.
