Wentworth man sentenced to 10 years behind bars for robbery, theft

The man robbed his uncle of R1200, and cousin of R200.

A WENTWORTH police detective, Sergeant Bhekithemba Manqoba Zulu, has been lauded for his sterling investigations which resulted in the conviction and a 10 year sentence handed down to man for robbery and theft.

Charles Bantam, 42, was sentenced to 10 years for robbery and two years for theft in the Durban Regional Court recently. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the Wentworth police station spokesperson, said the complainant, 62, and his daughter were counting money when they were approached by his nephew at a sports field in Ogle Road on September 3, last year.

He said Bantam then requested R50 from the complainant.

“The complainant refused to give him money and the accused then threatened to stab them with a beer bottle neck which he was in possession of. The complainant and his daughter were robbed of cash. The complainant was robbed of R1 200. The accused then approached his cousin and grabbed R200 from her and walked away,” he said.

Gumede said the case was assigned to Zulu to investigate, and Bateman was arrested and charged shortly thereafter on September 7.

Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, the station commander, commended Zulu for his professional investigation skills and for securing this conviction.

“His sterling work will serve as a lesson to others who prey on innocent citizens by committing such crimes,” she said.
